Steam locomotives destined for scrapping normally had their valve gear disconnected from the eccentric crank, allowing them to be towed with less cylinder resistance. 0-8-0 switcher No. 7718, however, was still intact when I photographed her in the dead line at the Detroit engine terminal in March 1954, and was not officially dropped from the roster until two years later. She belonged to class U-3c, delivered in 1922 by American Locomotive Company and Lima Locomotive Works. No. 7718's diamond-shaped builder's plate identifies her as a Lima product; her original number before 1936 was 318. Her specifications were identical to those of No. 7640 and 7643, shown previously.
